Economical Matching of the Thermal Reactor to Small Engine-Low Emission Concept Vehicles

The Inter-Industry Emission Control (IIEC) Program included the thermal reactor as one of the effective ways of oxidizing HC and CO in the exhaust system. However, this was accompanied by very substantial fuel economy penalties, especially in the case of small engine-low emission concept vehicles. Starting with a new concept aimed at obtaining the HC/CO oxidizing trigger temperature in the thermal reactor by modifying engine settings, the authors arrived at an economical technique of matching the thermal reactor to the engine.

Analysis of Vibrational Modes of Vehicle Steering Mechanisms

An analysis was made of vibration phenomena in the steering system of a vehicle, when the front wheels have some amount of unbalance. The program included vehicle running tests and bench tests to ascertain some of the factors influencing vibration behavior. A mathematical model of the vibration system was simulated on a digital computer in as much detail as possible. The resultant understanding of the dynamics of the system as a whole led to an extensive theoretical analysis of selected key parameters.

Development of the N-Type Runflat Tire and Its Evaluation in Vehicle Dynamics

Judging from viewpoint of automotive safety and more space by eliminating a spare tire, the development of the run-flat tires is important. Many problems relating to weight increase and usability had to be solved in the course of the development of such tires. The “ N ” type run-flat tire, described in this paper, has a simple structure with reinforced side walls and additional beads to fit the rim flanges. Though this tire system brought about a small amount of weight increase, it needs no special part, therefore the conventional road wheels, air valves and tire changers may be used. We have tested and evaluated this tire system equipped with passenger cars as well as on the test machines. Especially vehicle dynamics such as steering, stability and so forth were tested. The test results indicated that this tire system is practical enough.

Development of an Electronically-controlled Power Steering System

This Paper describes a computer-controlled power steering system that has been developed and applied to production vehicles. The system provides full power assist at parking speeds, and gradually decreases assistance with increasing vehicle speed to give a normal unassisted “road feel” at highway speeds. The system enables a driver to choose one assistance characteristic among three choices at the flick of a switch, according to the driver's preference and road conditions. A solenoid-operated bypass valve is used to reduce the hydraulic fluid supply to the steering gear, which results in a heavier steering effort. The most suitable valve characteristic curve which corresponds to the increased pressure in the system due to the applied torque is discussed in this study. It is shown that detection of the velocity of steering wheel rotation and extension of the range of characteristics possible are effective ways to ensure good control over the power assistance.

We worked on developing vehicles for the Dual Mode Bus System, and have completed a system which can be technically put into practical application. This paper introduces an outline of the system and vehicle. As regards the operational stability of the lateral guidance system, analyses, computations using a simulation model, and experiments using test cars were conducted on two types of guidance systems, a linked type, which is to link mechanically the guidance wheel with the steered wheel, and a non-linked type.

Basic vehicle performance, such as Safety, Comfort and Economy, are by dependent on tire performance, and it is the air pressure in the tire which assures this performance. However, tire air has a tendency to leak naturally, making it necessary to check them periodically. Since a deterioration in vehicle performance resulting from a drop on tire air pressure can not be directly felt by the driver, the number of people maintaining their tires sufficiently is relatively few. There have been many tire pressure warning devices developed which advise the driver when the pressure drops below a prescribed level. Differing from conventional devices, the TWD-III features a 7-step digital display (at a pitch of 0.1 kgf/cm2) which shows the pressure of each tire within an optional range, and it also has a flat tire warning function. The employment of echo effect from clystal vibrator resonance precludes the need to attach a power source on the tire.

Electronically Controlled Shock Absorber System Used as a Road Sensor Which Utilizes Super Sonic Waves

An important factor in the development of vehicle suspensions has been how to get higher performance from both ride and stability, which are normally in conflict. In addressing this problem, we analyzed the optimum damping forces of shock absorbers for various driving conditions and developed an electronically controlled shock absorber system, which we call “Super Sonic Suspension” based on the results. Through this microcomputer-controlled system, we achieved a great improvement in riding comfort by being able to the damping force much lower than before, based on the results of said analysis. At the same time, stability of the vehicle was also improved by optimumly controlling the damping force for various driving conditions through signals from a newly developed road sensor, which utilizes supersonic waves, and other sensors.

The expanded application of automotive electronics in recent years has increased the number of control switches, thus necessitating the optimization of their layout around the driver and improvement in operability. As an effective means in improving operability, switches mounted on the steering wheel have been developed, placing controls closer to drivers for easier access while driving. However, since the switches rotate along with the steering wheel, recognition and operation of those switches left a few things to be desired. Recently we developed a "steering wheel with a non-rotating center switch pad" where the pad section with the switches are kept stationary. In this paper we describe the general outline of this development.

Development of Practical Multiplexed Wiring System

This paper describes a new approach to solving various problems inherent in conventional multiplexed wiring systems. These problems include the fact that the quantity of cut leads, which determines the cost, is not reduced even though the bulk of the wire harness is decreased. Another problem is that the communications system has a very complex configuration. With the approach proposed here it has been found that the number of cut leads can be reduced by housing the communications circuits individually in each piece of electrical equipment. This can be accomplished by grouping together the wiring in which the signals activating electrical load units all flow in the same direction. Custom LSI circuits have been developed to simplify the communications circuits. All of these developments have been combined into practical multiplexed wiring systems for controlling the power Windows, automatic door locks and power seats.

Development of Practical Heads-Up Display for Production Vehicle Application

THIS PAPER presents an advanced heads-up display which has been newly developed for use in 88 Nissan Silvia model. The HUD consists of a projector with a newly developed high brightness VFD and light-selective film used as a combiner which is coated on the windshield. This combination provides good display legibility even under bright sunlight. The display shows the vehicle speed in a three-digit reading at distance of more than one meter from the driver's eyes. The windshield-coated combiner conforms to U.S. safety standards concerning light transmittance, abrasion and other performance requirements. Experimental data are also presented which substantiate the HUD's high legibility and confirm its effect in enhancing the driver's attention toward the road ahead

The Development of an Experimental Four-Wheel-Steering Vehicle

This paper describes the development of a vehicle with four-wheel steering in which the rear wheels can be controlled electronically in addition to the conventional front-wheel steering system. In the method for steering the rear wheels, the side-slip angle at the vehicle's center of gravity is maintained at zero, which improves the basic dynamic properties of the vehicle. This approach allows greater maneuverability at low speed by means of counter-phase rear steering and improved stability at high speed through same-phase rear steering. However, the use of counter-phase rear steering to improve maneuverability gives rise to problems in regard to practicality. In addition, continuously controlled four-wheel steering, using counter-phase at low speed and same-phase at high speed, leads to many other problems regarding practicality because of the strong apparent understeer characteristics.

A New System for Independently Controlling Braking Force Between Inner and Outer Rear Wheels

This paper presents a new system for controlling the braking force between the inner and outer wheels in a turn independently. Vehicle cornering performance has improved noticeably in recent years thanks to advances achieved in tire and suspension technology. Due to this improvement, vehicle handling characteristics during braking have taken on added importance. To achieve stabler handling properties during braking in a turn, a new evaluation method is being used at Nissan to analyze vehicle directional stability. The analytical results show that decreasing the yaw moment before wheel locking occurs is effective in achieving stabler handling. An effective approach to decreasing the yaw moment is to control the braking force between the inner and outer wheels independently. Base on these analytical results and experimental data obtained with actual vehicles, a new system has been developed that provides such independent control over the braking force.

Optimization Analysis for Vehicle Vibration mode Control

The occurrence of various vibrations and noises in an automobile, such as idling vibration, boom noise and road noise, is greatly affected by the natural vibration modes and could be developed for controlling the body strength and weight these problems could be solved and a high-performance vehicle realised. This paper presents an analytical method developed by the authors to solve these problems and gives examples of its application. In developing this method, the problems of natural vibration mode and static stiffness control were addressed. Perturbation and sensitivity analysis methods have already been proposed for mode control. Four typical methods were examined and the best one was chosen in terms of accuracy and calculation time when handling large-scale problems. For static sensitivity analysis, we proposed a nevi method which is like natural mode sensitivity analysis.

Development of a Lithium-ion Battery System for HEVs

This paper describes a high-power lithium-ion battery system that has been newly developed for application to hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The battery system was designed on the premise of an underfloor location so as to avoid sacrificing interior spaciousness while providing the power output and recharge performance required by the hybrid propulsion system. To meet these requirements, efforts were made to increase the specific power and to reduce the heat generation of the battery to previously unattained levels. As a result, exceptionally high specific power of 1,200 W/kg per cell, battery pack power of 25kW at 20% state of charge (SOC), and high charge/discharge efficiency of more than 95% in the urban driving schedule has been achieved. The battery pack is composed of two box-shaped modules designed with a low height in consideration of underfloor mountability.

Development of the Nissan Fuel Cell Vehicle

Nissan has recently developed and begun driving tests of a fuel cell vehicle equipped with a methanol reformer that produces hydrogen through the use of a catalyst to induce chemical reactions between methanol and water. With this onboard fuel cell system, only methanol in the form of a liquid fuel needs to be supplied, making the system highly practical as an automotive powertrain for near-future application. The Nissan Fuel Cell Vehicle (FCV) adopts a high-efficiency neodymium magnet synchronous traction motor combined with lithium-ion batteries that enable the vehicle to achieve optimum electric power by switching between a fuel cell-powered driving mode and a battery-powered driving mode. This presentation will cover the current status of the FCV development program and driving test results.

Study of a High-Power Lithium-Ion Battery for Parallel HEV Application

Our studies of the lithium-ion battery system have shown considerably more power capability than some existing batteries. Based on these results, we have developed a lithium-ion battery for parallel hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) application. This battery system provides around ten times the specific power of conventional batteries and also achieves high recharging performance and high charge/discharge efficiency. Evaluation results indicate that it is a highly promising energy source for PHEVs.

Reciprocal Measurements of the Vehicle Transfer Function for Road Noise

Road Noise is generated by the change of random displacement input inside the tire contact patch. Since the existing 3 or 6 directional electromagnetic shakers have a flat surface at the tire contact patch, these shakers cannot excite the vehicle in a manner representative of actual on-road road noise input. Therefore, this paper proposes a new experimental method to measure the road noise vehicle transfer function. This method is based on the reciprocity between the tire contact patch and the driver's ear location. The reaction force sensor of the tire contact patch is newly developed for the reciprocal loud speaker excitation at the passenger ear location. In addition, with this equipment, it is possible to extract the dominant structural mode shapes creating high sound pressure in the automotive interior acoustic field. This method is referred to as experimental structure mode participation to the noise of the acoustic field in the vibro-acoustic coupling analysis.

Study on Miniaturization of an Air-Cooled Inverter Integrated with Motor

This paper reports about a trial for miniaturization of an air-cooled inverter integrated with motor, which is realized by reduction of the total volume of smoothing capacitor. An integrated system prototype was constructed with a disk-shaped inverter positioned at the rear end of the motor. We examined the possibility of using a ceramic capacitor, which features a higher heat-resistance temperature, lower internal resistance and higher capacity density than a film capacitor. At the same level of capacitance, the volume of a ceramic capacitor is less than one-half that of a film capacitor, enabling the size of the smoothing capacitor to be reduced to approximately one-fifth that of the currently used device. A suitable circuit configuration and physical layout of distributed smoothing capacitors and corresponding power device modules are proposed and demonstrated.

The Progress of SKY Project. - Cooperative ITS Safety Support -

The SKY Project (Start ITS from Kanagawa, Yokohama) was launched in October 2004 in Yokohama, Japan in order to contribute to the local community by reducing traffic accidents and congestion. SKY is a private sector collaboration between Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., NTT DoCoMo, Inc., Panasonic Corporation, and Xanavi Informatics Corporation (now Clarion Ltd.). Support has also been provided from the public sector, namely the National Police Agency of Japan (NPA) and the Kanagawa Prefectural Police. Through the use of in-vehicle technology and an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) that communicates with the infrastructure, information on nearby vehicles and the surrounding traffic environment can be utilized to reduce traffic accidents, shorten travel times, and increase fuel savings. These are the goals of the SKY project. This paper shows the results of early stage testing and the introduction of newly started trials.
